Botswana Financial Institutions and Allied Workers Union (BOFIAWU) transformed from Botswana Bank Employees Union (BOBEU) of 1989 and 1998. Before the transformation Botswana Banks Insurance and Finance Union (BOBIFU) was suggested as one of the possible names for the Union, however there was an anonymous decision to go with BOBEU.
The transformation from BOBEU to BOFIAWU in 2020 was adopted, to include other financial sectors such as asset managers, stock exchanges, pension funds, security dealers, micro lenders, porn shops and savings and cooperative societies (SACCOS). The change was adopted to cater for the growing financial services market in the country. BOFIAWU’s main objective is to promote, protect the rights, interests, and welfare of its members. BOFIAWU advocates or ensures collective bargaining on behalf of its members for improved working conditions, better remunerations and benefits and job security. BOFIAWU also offers legal assistance to its members as needed.
